UI/UX Case Study:
Website and Portal
Design

Creating a new website and designing a new user journey for environmental consultants and investors.

Summary:

Title:

Genvision Website Design

Client:

Genvision

Role:

UI/ UX Designer

Duration

June 2023 - August 2023

Team:

Buisness Development Team

This is a project I worked on as a UX design intern at Genvision ( a company that helps businesses, NPOs and environmental consultants that are interested in carbon offset project).

As the sole designer on their team, I was in charge of rebuilding their 1. website. The current goal of the company was to showcase their product to investors in a concise and easily understandable way.

I also worked on designing their 2. portal that helps customers keep track of the CO2 removal of their forests as a new user journey for their product.

01. Website Redesign:

The goal of the website and for the start up was starting a website that can show clearly their product to investors. The company had various aspects of their AI technology that were revolutionizing the carbon-offset/forestry industry. The problem however was that their current website did not show the level of impact they had and why customers should choose their service over traditional methods

02. Dashboard:

Another project that I wanted to implement along with the website was the portal page where customers keep track of their carbon offset project in an efficient and easy to navigate method. While this was a future goal for the company, I helped design the user journey and starting the portal on Figma.

The Challenge

By analyzing satellite images of nature with AI, Genvision is solving the world's biggest challenge in its transition to carbon neutrality.

The current website does not clearly show the impact their technology is bringing to the environment. Moreover, the website should engage the audience to want to invest in or work with Genvision.

With that here were some of the goals that I discussed with the business development lead:

1. Increasing customer to get in touch
2. Summarizing a long case study that shows their product
3. New quick and eye catching visual

New Website Design:

1. Visual Branding

Genvision had a lot of photographic images using their AI satellite imaging technology. I wanted to incorporate this more in to their website that showcases how the company is using the most recent high-tech solutions. For instance, the hero image of the home page was a rendered image created using of a tree visualizing the tree growth of one of their projects

Grid View Comparison

It was also important to show directly how they compared to traditional measurements on the home page. Previously their website would write it out on their case study but after conducting the user journey I believed this was an important information that would catch the attention of the viewers. My solution was to create a grid on their home page that quickly compares traditional vs  genvision's model before viewers dive in further in the other pages

2. Case Study

Another challenge was to summarize a long case study. The intent of the case study was to show the process of how AI satellite images are used to measure trees and project growth and the carbon offset in the future. The previous method was to drop a long pdf case study once a viewer type their emails. However, a long case study would quickly loose interest of the viewer. Instead I built a more interactive page with a graph to quickly visualize their data sets.

3. Clear CTAs

creating clear CTAs for their website was also essential to support the user journey with the end goal being to get customers and investors interested in Genvision's product. This was done by creating changes in the navigation bar and also within each page. The photograph above shows the user journey created with the team during the initial stage of development.

4. Getting Customers to "Get in Touch"

The previous user journey was that getting in touch with the company meant having to book a call with specific intentions to be on a project. However this creates a lot of friction and hesitation before looking at their own calendar, finding a time to book a call and booking a call. Another in-between way in addition of booking a demonstration call was a contact page that would allow them to write a quick inquiry. This was also aligned with their goal to getting more in-touch with their customers and understanding their customer base

Process:

Before embarking on the website, I discussed with my supervisor about each page to create and the content I believed could be implemented.

"Book a Demo":
booking a demo meant potential customers get in touch with Genvision and take the first step to discuss  specific solutions tailored to their need
"View Case Study":
the case study was a example report that used their AI product on a plot of land in Schaffen, Belgium
View Report:

Another goal of the project were sharing the exact measurements for customers (usually those who have their carbon offset projects in mind) the exact datasets.

User Journey:

inorder to understand the target audience and put myself in their shoes, I also created a user journey map that thinks through how they would navigate through the website.

Persona:
Career: Government NPO
Expectation: own a plot of land and invested in a carbon offset project. They come through Genvision's website and interested how they can help measure the carbon offset of their forest more accurately and receive recommendation

02: Dashboard:

New Dashboard Home Page

The new dashboard will be personalized for each customer where they can check an overview of their forestry project.

Part 1: Toggle to view top view of their forestry project

Part 2: Choosing your project on each report

Part 3: Overview page and selecting each data visualization

Part 4: Navigation to Projection Page

Part 5: Saving Archived Views

REFLECTION:

This internship allowed me to gain multiple experiences in design from coming up with a new brand/visual identity for the company as well as building the website. It was also important to be consistently communicating with my supervisor and other members of company in order to make sure that the user journey that I was designing aligned with the company's goals. So while I was able to take a lot of initiative as a designer, good communication was still an important aspect in my task.
